The only museum dedicated to the history of the American piano, and its importance in the social and economic history of the industrializing America of the 19th century, has closed because of financial difficulties, mainly resulting from our being only a few blocks from Ground Zero on 9/11. The Museum of the American Piano founded by Kalman Detrich, opened its doors to the public in 1984.  It is a non-profit organization recognized by the State of New York's Board of Regents.  Dedicated to preserving the history of the piano, the Museum is also committed to the instrument's future.  Specifically, its purpose is to establish, furnish, maintain, and operate a museum collecting and housing early pianos of historical, technical, and musical significance, including acquisition and restoration of same.  Its purpose is also to teach traditional methods of working on and maintaining older and newer pianos including woodworking, wood finishing, tuning, repairing, and restoring.  The Museum presents activities that may maintain or expand the use of the piano in our culture.  It offers recitals on old and new instruments, presenting lectures, competitions, and other music related activities.

A 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization chartered by the University of the State of New York, State Education Department, Board of Regents in 1984.
